housing types shown

Boundary zone between Hasidic and African American areas. East New York Avenue (major east-west road) seems to be pretty definite economic-social-religious-racial frontier. Difference extends to built environment. North of East New York houses are in long rows and rather stately apartments to north. South of the avenue, buildings more varied, no block ever built up by a single developer. Longest rows are five to six houses. Several one story cottages (all now with additions), some zero-setback three story apartments, vacant lots. Also one large tower (NYCHA, Reid Apartments). Construction extends from about 1900 to present. Generally six-seven foot setbacks, small backyards.
